Annual Unemployment, 2015-2025 | Detroit Warren Dearborn MSA vs US

The Detroit Warren Dearborn MSA had a strong economic recovery coming out of the pandemic. In fact, the MSA saw its lowest unemployment rate of the last decade in 2023 at 3.6%, below on track with the U.S. overall. Amid the pandemic, the annual unemployment rate in the region peaked at 11.6%, about 3.5 points higher than the national average. Over the last four years, the MSA has seen annual unemployment rates on track with the nation, but slightly higher. In the last two years, the annual unemployment rate began to rise slightly, to 4.9% through the end of 2025.

Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties host 71.9% of the region’s population. The counties with the lowest populations include Shiawassee (67,982), Lapeer (89,168), and Lenawee (97,746).
